Using a Breast Pump

Directly breastfeeding your baby is highly recommended, as many of our moms feel that this process has definitely helped to build a close bond between them and their babies.

Having said that, we all know how tiring and demanding this process can be. For most working mothers, direct breastfeeding during office hours will be impossible.

Thankfully, there's the breast pump - mom's best friend for the next couple of months after delivery!

Here are some tips from our moms, on using a breast pump

1. make sure you choose a good, reliable brand that has strong suction.

2. we strongly recommend a battery operated pump (instead of a hand-action pump) - that will save you a lot of time and energy, which you need to reserve for other things like changing baby's diapers etc.

3. be prepared before delivery - if you rent a pump from the hospital, it will cost you a lot of $$$

4. before you pump, wash your hands and wipe around your breasts with a warm, clean towel.

5. use a hot compress, especially in the first week, to help get the milk flowing

6. take lots of water at regular intervals to ensure a good strong flow

7. young papaya + fish bone soup will work wonders in getting the milk flowing - many of our moms attest to that

Most of all, do not be discouraged if the milk flow isn't good initially. Many of our moms have said that initially, they managed to produce only a few drops. This could last for weeks. But if you persevere, you can be certain that eventually, the milk will come, and when it comes, you'll be very proud of yourself!

If you have any questions on breastfeeding, please feel free to add a comment to this article - we'll do our best to help!
