It’s impossible to know the exact moment of conception. Hence, it is the normal practice to count 40 weeks from the date of your last menstrual period, in order to determine your estimated due date. Like most women, you're probably most fertile in the middle of your menstrual cycle, or about two weeks after your last period starts. At that point you'll have a window of about three or four days when you're most likely to conceive. Pregnancy therefore actually starts about two weeks before fertilization, when the sperm penetrates the egg.
When you’re planning to conceive, you should take good care of your body as that will directly affect your baby. Take note of these important points:
· Avoid alcohol, caffeine and tobacco products as these can cause birth defects and other complications
· Check with your doctor before taking any forms of medicine, which include even creams such as steroid creams or acne/pimple creams
· Have a well balanced diet, which should include high calclium milk, vitamins and folic acid, which can help reduce the risk of birth defects caused by incomplete development of the brain or spinal cord, such as spina bifida. You should check with your gynecologist for the correct dosage.
