The Postpartum Diet

What should new mothers eat? Should your diet be any different from what you've been eating before you were pregnant? How about breastfeeding moms? What should they eat to ensure a good, regular flow of milk?

Here are some rules for all new moms, on how to ensure that your diet is balanced:

1. avoid fast food - which contain lots of calories which will fill you up and add inches to your waistline - but which lack good nutrition

2. don't miss any meals. If you do so, you will be depriving your breastfed baby from receiving good nutrition

3. complex carbohydrates should be taken regularly. Brown rice, wholemeal bread, legumes should be taken in healthy doses (at least 2 helpings daily)

4. avoid sugary foods and drinks - they cause you to put on weight and do little or nothing for you body

5. avoid alcohol - an occasional sip every few weeks shouldn't do much harm to your breastfed baby, but generally, alcohol goes directly from your bloodstream into your breast milk. That's not good for your baby

7. yogurt will help with your digestion and bowel movements (many moms complain about constipation especially after delivery)
