Baby's First Checkup

Baby's first checkup usually occurs between 1 to 4 weeks. Usually, upon birth, the pediatrician at the hospital will tell you when he's due for his first checkup.

These are the things that happen at the first checkup, from the experience of some of our moms:

1. doctor will ask generally how the baby and family are coping

2. baby's weight, head circumference and body full body length will be measured

4. report of neonatal tests

5. physical examination of the heart for regular heartbeat

6. physical examination of the abdomen for abnormal lumps

7. physical examination of limbs for normal motion and to ensure no dislocation

8. physical examination of the spine

9. examination of eyes for reflexes and focusing ability

10. examination of the nose and mouth

11. examination of the fontanels

12. examination of lymph glands around the neck and in the armpits

13. checking to ensure that the umbilical cord is healing properly

14. checking the baby's respiration

15. checking the genitals

16. checking the skin for rashes

As you can see, there's quite a bit to check up. Seeing a good pediatrician is important for the first few visits at least - to ensure that nothing is missed.
